The Unexpected Joys of Sports” I Do In The Summer
Ah, summer! A time for beach balls, barbecues, and tan lines that reveal just how often I miss spots with the sunscreen. While many folks are out there mastering the art of beach volleyball, surfing, or some serious mountain hiking, I’ve embraced a slightly… let’s say “unique”… summer sports regimen. And I’d argue it’s just as intense.

1. Ice Cream Cone Balancing
First on my list: the delicate and time-sensitive sport of ice cream cone balancing. Picture this: a blazing hot day, you’ve got a double-scoop of your favorite flavor, and every lick is a race against the sun. The goal? Enjoy the ice cream without wearing it.
Training involves mastering the twist and turn method, ensuring no side drips faster than the other. It’s a game of focus, precision, and making peace with the fact that you might end up with a sprinkle-covered chin.
2. Sunscreen Ninja
Ever tried putting on sunscreen without missing a spot, especially the middle of your back? That’s my second favorite summer sport. It involves flexibility, dexterity, and, if you’re like me, occasionally recruiting a kind stranger with a plea of, “Excuse me, can you help me with this spot right here?” You haven’t lived until you’ve turned sunscreen application into a combination of yoga and trust exercises.
3. Flip-Flop Sprinting
Who knew footwear could turn an innocent walk into an Olympic event? When a flip-flop strap breaks in public (it’s always in public), the sport of flip-flop sprinting commences. With one functional shoe and one flap-happy one, it’s a race to get to a shoe store, your car, or any safe haven without face-planting on the sidewalk.
4. “The Wave”
Though concerts may not be strictly a “summer” thing, there’s something about the season that makes music sound better outdoors. And with music, comes “The Wave.” Perfecting that wave involves timing, coordination, and, dare I say, a sense of community. Waves for everyone!
5. Extreme Picnicking
Last but not least, extreme picnicking. Finding the perfect spot in the shade, fending off ambitious squirrels, and protecting your sandwiches from surprise summer showers requires strategy, quick reflexes, and dedication.
While my summer sports might not make it to the Olympics anytime soon, they’re filled with laughter, life lessons, and the occasional ice cream stain. They’ve taught me to embrace the unexpected, to find humor in little moments, and most importantly, to enjoy the sunshine (with adequately applied sunscreen, of course).
Here’s to making memories, even if they’re a little unconventional!
